Chapter 9
Jeffrey looked at the red and pink objects resting on velvet pillows in the storefront. There was a book on how to pleasure your woman, something he obviously did not need. There were heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. A variety of items stared Jeffrey right in the face, but they all seemed inadequate as a Valentine's Day present. Shilo was special; he deserved the best.
Jeffrey glanced at his watch. It was after four o'clock. He knew he needed to hurry, as today was Feb. 14, the day when the words "I love you" had better come out of your mouth at least fifteen times if you had a sweetheart, if you knew what was good for you. He couldn't believe he had waited until the last minute to find something for Shilo, but the past couple of weeks had been a whirlwind of insanity.
The trail on who could have been shooting at Jeffrey and Shilo on the highway that one night had gone cold. Jeffrey had also been dealing with the conflicting emotions that had arisen from his father's death. Richard Layton had always been a hard-nosed son-of-a-bitch who had never tolerated weakness and was one of the biggest homophobes Jeffrey had ever known. The cold treatment the elder Layton had displayed when Jeffrey came clean about being gay was reprehensible. Yet there was the grim reality that Jeffrey's father always made sure the family was warm in the winter, and there had always been plenty of food on the table. Part of Jeffrey wanted the bastard to burn in hell, while the other part missed Daddy immensely.
The internal conflict in Jeffrey's soul was impacting his life in other ways. Jeffrey had been neglecting his duties as Shilo's lover. While part of it was due to the other distractions in their lives, there was also the fact that they were both exhausted. With Shilo's grandmother in town, Shilo had been juggling his job with being tour guide, although Penny had been taking some solitary excursions.
Fortunately, Penny had been allowed to stay by the old woman's pure stubbornness. Once Shilo's sister, Lynn, had heard about the highway sniper, she had insisted that Penny come home with her for her own safety, but Penny would hear nothing of it. Jeffrey remembered that he and Shilo had just looked at each other and smiled as grandmother and granddaughter quarreled back and forth for a good half-hour.
Still, getting back to the present, Jeffrey still needed to pick out something for his beloved -- something big that said "I love you" more intensely than ever. He didn't know why he felt this way, as he always used to see the Valentine holiday as a scam. If you love someone, he believed, you showed him you loved him every day, not just one cold winter's day in February. For some reason, after all that had happened to him and Shilo, Jeffrey felt the need for a big gesture to show Shilo his true feelings.
Then again, he had a big gesture in the pocket of his pants.
